CUSTOMS IMPORT CLIENTS – NEW EMISSION STANDARDS FOR IMPORTED ENGINES

31/5/2018

To our Valued Customers,

BR International would like to make our clients aware that the Australian Government has introduced emissions standards for new small spark-ignition engines (maximum power 19 kilowatts) powering outdoor equipment (e.g. lawn mowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers and generators) and spark-ignition marine engines. Such products are referred to as “emissions-controlled products”.

In summary, from July 1 2018, only products meeting the emissions standards may be imported into Australia, whilst from July 1, 2019, only products meeting the emissions standards are able to be supplied within Australia.

Products certified to standards by one of the following international authorities are considered compliant with Australian standards: -

  • United States Environmental Protection Agency
  • Californian Air Resources Board
  • Environment and Climate Change Canada
  • A European Union Approval Authority

Where a product is not certified to one of these international standards, importers (or manufacturer’s) may apply for Australian certification, or an exemption, through the Department of the Environment and Energy’s online services platform.

Importers of emissions-controlled products must provide their customs broker with a certification or exemption number to enable smooth clearances and avoid delays on shipments arriving from July 1, 2018.

Please contact your BR International customs brokerage team, should you have any queries in relation to this topic.

Keeping you updated,

BRi Customs Team
