Melbourne’s heat wave topped at 41.8 degrees Celsius at 5pm yesterday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

High temperatures are forecast for the rest of the week, above 40 degrees, until the weekend.

A spokesperson for DP World told Lloyd’s List Australia that all outside activities at the terminal cease when the temperature reaches 38 degrees Celsius.

“Work resumes promptly when the temperature falls past this point,” the spokesperson said.

As temperatures in Melbourne were forecast to reach 38C and above this week, DP World advised carriers on Tuesday of the possibility the terminal would be unable to deliver import reefers and receive export reefers due to occupational health and safety agreements in place at West Swanson Terminal and West Swanson Intermodal Terminal.

“Ambient temperature has no impact on the service we provide to reefers once they are received at the terminal, as they are on power,” the spokesperson said.

“We are working with our landside customers to manage the receival and delivery of reefer containers around the peaks in the extreme temperatures (i.e. above 38 degrees Celsius).”

DP World has advised carriers that as it is currently not receiving any export reefers off-site, there is no ability to redirect reefers.

All customers are to expect delays around transport and release of containers due to weather interference.
